Improving the brightness of metal parts usually requires more than simply increasing machine operating time.
The initial surface condition is important. Deep machining marks or heavy burrs should normally be removed before the final polishing stage.
Abrasive media should then become progressively finer as the process moves from grinding to polishing.
For some applications, a multi-stage process can provide better results:
Deburring → Grinding → Fine Finishing → Polishing
Polishing compound can also help improve surface appearance depending on the material and finishing method.
Machine type affects the polishing intensity and movement pattern. Centrifugal, vibratory, barrel, and magnetic polishing systems may produce different results on the same workpiece.
The workpiece material must also be considered. Stainless steel, aluminum, copper, and zinc alloy require different process parameters.
To achieve a consistent bright metal finish, manufacturers should optimize media, compound, machine settings, and cycle time together rather than focusing on only one factor.
