Deburring and edge rounding are related but different metal finishing processes.
Deburring focuses on removing unwanted sharp edges and burrs created during machining, stamping, cutting, or casting.
Edge rounding goes one step further by creating a controlled radius along the edge. This can improve safety, reduce stress concentration, and prepare the component for later assembly or coating.
The required finishing intensity depends on the original burr size and the desired edge condition.
Abrasive media selection is especially important. Aggressive media can remove burrs quickly, while finer media can provide more controlled edge treatment.
Different finishing machines can be used depending on the component geometry and production requirements, including vibratory, barrel, centrifugal, and other mass finishing systems.
For precision parts, the goal should not simply be to remove the burr. The final edge condition should be defined and verified through sample testing and inspection.
