What Exactly Is A Divided Dry Polishing Machine?

4 Station Multi Opening Mirror Fine Grinding Machine

If your factory polishes small metal parts - jewelry, 3C electronic components, lock parts, watch hardware - you have probably faced the same problem for years: parts come out of the polishing barrel with impact marks caused by the parts hitting each other, not by the media. And when you change product, you have to order a new set of custom fixtures.

The divided dry polishing machine was invented to end both problems. In this guide, we explain what it is, how it works, and which industries benefit most - based on our 18 years of manufacturing grinding and polishing equipment in Dongguan, China.

A divided dry polishing machine (also called a compartment or partition-type dry tumbling machine) is a fully automatic barrel polishing system in which the work barrel is separated into independent compartments by removable partition plates.

Two words define it:

Divided - one barrel becomes many separate "rooms". Each batch of workpieces is polished inside its own compartment, so parts never collide with each other during the process.

Dry - the machine runs without water, using dry polishing media such as walnut shell grit or corn cob abrasive together with a polishing compound. No water spots, no flash rust, no wastewater treatment.

Because the partitions are removable, not fixed, the operator can reconfigure compartment sizes in minutes to match any workpiece - big or small - with zero custom fixture cost.

How It Works: The Process in 5 Steps

Load - Place each batch of parts into its own compartment, then add dry polishing media and polishing compound (typical media-to-parts ratio around 3:1, compartments filled 50–60%).

Rotate - The barrel assembly rotates at a controlled low speed. Media and parts tumble gently inside each closed compartment.

Rub, not hammer - Because parts stay separated, the only thing touching your workpieces is the media: thousands of soft, uniform contacts that cut away burrs and micro-scratches.

Compound does the brightening - The polishing compound (matched to your metal: brass, stainless steel, aluminum, zinc alloy) progressively takes the surface from satin to mirror gloss.

Unload and repeat - Open the compartments, separate parts from media (a parts separator machine can automate this), and start the next batch. Process recipes are stored on the touch panel for one-button recall.

Key Design Features to Compare Between Suppliers

Feature Why it matters
Removable vs. fixed partitions Removable = one machine serves all product sizes; fixed = you pay for fixtures forever
Automatic lubrication Self-maintaining drive system = stable accuracy and a service life of around 10 years
Barrel liner material Smooth PU liner avoids secondary scratches on polished surfaces
Speed control range Fine speed adjustment lets you tune between fast deburring and gentle mirror finishing
Enclosure and dust design A fully enclosed, dust-proof body is required for clean workshops
Safety interlocks Door-open power cut-off and cover protection protect both operator and parts

Which Industries Use Divided Dry Polishing Machines?

Jewelry & wearables - rings, pendants and watch parts polished without nicks

3C electronics - phone housings, notebook covers, camera rings, connector pins

Lock & hardware - lock cylinders, hinge parts, zinc alloy handles

Eyewear - delicate frames that cannot touch each other during finishing

Automotive decoration - key shells (8K mirror class), interior trim parts

Large workpieces - for oversized parts, open-compartment models such as our 680-series are available

Divided Dry Polishing vs. Ordinary Barrel Polishing

  Ordinary barrel Divided dry polishing
Part-to-part contact Yes - impact marks on soft metals None - parts stay in separate compartments
Fixtures for different products Often required Not required - adjust partitions instead
Water usage & stains Wet process, water spots possible Dry process, stain-free
Mixed-size batches Must run separately Can run together in different compartments

FAQ

Can one machine polish both very small and larger parts?
Yes. That is the core advantage of removable partitions: shrink compartments for tiny parts, remove them for large ones.

Does a dry process polish as well as wet polishing?
For brightening and mirror finishing of small hardware, a properly matched dry media + compound recipe reaches mirror gloss - with the bonus of no water stains and no drying step.

How long does a machine last?
With automatic lubrication and a precision drive system, our dry polishing machines are engineered for around ten years of continuous production use.

See It Running

We publish real polishing demonstrations - copper parts, car key shells, jewelry - filmed in our Dongguan factory. Send us your workpiece samples and we will run a free polishing test, record the recipe, and recommend the right machine configuration.
